    Dr Tony Alabi, Director of Planning Research and Statistics

    Profile

    Director of Planning Research and Statistics (UBEC) Dr Tony Alabi was born on 19th April 1952 at Ogori in Ogori-Magongo LGA of Kogi state in North-Central Nigeria. He completed his primary education at St. Peter's Primary School, Ogori in December 1965. In 1966 January, he started his secondary education at Government Secondary School, Okene where he completed his secondary education in 1970 and proceeded to obtain the Higher School Certificate in 1972. He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University in 1977 with a second-class upper degree. After the National Youth Service, he started as Education Officer II but soon returned to Ahmadu Bello University to commence the Graduate-in-training programme in 1979; thereby commencing a career of teaching in the university. He obtained his Masters degree in Educational Administration and Planning in 1982 and his Doctoral in 1991. In 1992, he was promoted as a Senior Lecturer.

    His administrative experience in the university included being head of unit, Admin and Planning Section of the Department of Education, 1989-1991, Examination officer, Department of Education, 1990-1991, Assistant Dean (Post-graduate Matters), 1993-1994. He was also Hall adviser in Ribadu Hall, 1991-1993. He co-supervised post-graduate students; and was external Examiner to Katsina State College of Education and Bayero University, 1992-1994.

    In 1994, Dr Alabi joined the services of the then National Primary Education Commission as a Chief Planning Officer. He was promoted to Deputy Director in 2001. He has been a member of the Appointment, Promotions and Disciplinary Committee of Commission. Dr Alabi was the Desk Officer for Research and Development in the World Bank Primary Education project II, 1994-2000. He served in many committees hosted in the Federal Ministry of Education, including the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Teachers' Salary Structure (1995); the ministerial Committee on PTF Projects in education sector, Ministerial Committee on Open and Distance Learning, 2000-2001 that led to the re-establishment of National Open University of Nigeria. He has attended specialist management and technical training within and outside the country, including at Harvard University. He is a PRINCE2 certified project manager.

    Dr Alabi is happily married to Olufunmilayo Alabi and they are blessed with three children.
