    Staff Profile

Dr Chukwuma Christian Agomoh , Acting Director Department of Quality Assurance

    Profile

Acting Director Department of Quality Assurance (UBEC) Dr Chukwuma Christian Agomoh was born to the family of late Mazi Agomoh Nwasoh of Umuekwule, Umuopara in Umuahia, Abia State on 17th July 1957. He started his primary education at Ezeleke Community Primary School, Umuahia in the then Eastern Region in 1962 and was to finish in 1967 but for the Nigerian civil war. He did his secondary education at the famous Methodist College Uzuakoli in the then East Central State from 1970 to 1974, obtained the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in Biology/Chemistry from the then Advanced Teachers' College/Ahmadu Bello University, Kano (now FCE, Kano) in 1979, did NYSC at Oke-Ila Grammar School, Oke-Ila Orangun in the old Oyo State (now Osun State) from 1979 to 1980.

On coming back to the old Imo State, he was employed as a Master III and posted to Item High School in Bende LGA to teach Science. Not satisfied with the NCE, he got admission to read Education/Biology at the University of Nigeria on " leave without pay" in 1980. He did a 2-year degree programme and obtained the Bachelor of Science degree in Education/Biology (specializing in Botany) in 1982 with Second Class Honours (Lower Division).

The then Imo State Education Board re-instated him as Master I in 1982 and posted to his alma mater, Methodist College, Uzuakoli (a 1923 school). He remained a Master I from 1982 to 1990 when he joined the defunct National Primary Education Commission (NPEC) as Senior Monitoring Officer on "transfer of service" in October 1990. The State Education Board later released his promotion to Senior Master II with effect from 1/7/1990. While teaching at Methodist College Uzuakoli, Dr Agomoh received such commendation and awards as War Against Indiscipline Commendation (1983) and Staff Award for Hardwork for three consecutive years (1984-1986). He was the Master in-charge of Social activities, a House Master, a dutiful and dedicated teacher, and an epitome of integrity and discipline. All his students from 1982 to 1988, and even those who were admitted after he left the College, will testify to this.

His stay in National Primary Education Commission (NPEC) was short-lived as the organization was dissolved on 1st January 1991. He obtained the Master of Education (M.Ed) degree in Educational Administration and Planning of the University of Calabar in January 1991. The re-deployment of staff of the defunct NPEC took him to the former Centre for Educational Measurement (CEM) that had resposibility for conducting the then Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE) at the national level, among other national examinations. Thus, he was a foundation staff of the defunct National Board for Educational Measurement (NBEM) which emerged from the transformation of CEM by Decree 69 of 1993. NBEM relocated to Minna in September 1992. While in NBEM, he was promoted to Principal Education Officer by the Federal Ministry of Education with effect from January 1994. The transformation of NBEM resulted in the present National Examinations Council (NECO).

Dr Agomoh returned to the new NPEC re-established under Decree 96 of 1993 in 1994 as Principal Monitoring Officer. He was promoted to Assistant Chief Monitoring Officer, Chief Monitoring Officer and Assistant Director on 1/1/1997, 1/1/2000 and 1/1/2003 respectively. He enrolled for the Ph.D programme in Educational Evaluation at the University of Ibadan in July 2003 and finished in December 2006. While at the University of Ibadan, Dr Agomoh excelled in his academic work, was the first in his set to hit all the major landmarks in the Ph.D programme and the first to complete same in record time.

Dr C. C. Agomoh was promoted to Deputy Director in Universal Basic Education Commission with effect from 1/1/2007, a position he occupied till he was appointed Acting Director in-charge of Quality Assurance Department in UBEC in September 2011.

His Ph.D thesis, titled "An Evaluation of the Child-Friendly Environmental Status of Primary Schools in Abia State, Nigeria", was adjudged to be the second best in the University of Ibadan out of a total of 162 Ph.Ds awarded by the University in the 2005/2006 session. Thus, the "Award for the 1st Runner-Up in the Best Ph.D Thesis Competition in the University of Ibadan for the 2005/2006 Academic Session", comprising a plaque and cash prize, was presented to him on Friday, 27th March 2009 at a special/colourful ceremony as the climax of activities "Celebrating Six Decades of Postgraduate Education and 30 Years of Exemplary Academic Leadership" that attracted "Who's Who" in the University and presided over by the Pro-Chancellor.

Others included Elder Statesman Award by the Graduate Students' Association of Nigeria (GSAN) of University of Ibadan and Good Leadership Award by National Association of Abia State Students of University of Ibadan, Ibadan. All these awards were in 2006. The latest was the Distinguished Old Boy (DOB) award by the Uzuakoli Methodist College Old Boys' Association at its biennial Home Coming in November 2009. Dr Agomoh has participated in various monitoring and evaluation activities and both local and international Conferences. These include the 3rd IEA International Research Conference (IRC 2008) in Taipei, Taiwan in September 2008; the First Malaysian International Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in April 2009; and a capacity building programme in Glen Burnie, Maryland, USA in July/August 2011.

Dr Agomoh has travelled widely in Nigeria and has a good knowledge of the Basic Education system in Nigeria. His hobbies include travelling, reading, and watching football and Nigerian home movies.

Dr Agomoh is a good Methodist who has served the Church in various capacities. These include those of Member, Church Development Committee (1997 - 1998) and Church Secretary (1999 to 2000) at Christ Methodist Church, Kigo Road Extension, Kaduna; Chairman, Harvest Committee (2002 and 2003) at Wesley Methodist Church, Ikenegbu, Owerri; Vice-Chairman, Harvest Committee (2001 and 2002) at Methodist Church, Nigeria, Kubwa, Abuja; and currently Secretary, School Board, Methodist Church, Nigeria, Kubwa, Abuja, 2009.
